How Do You Keep Your Eyes Safe at Home?

There’s more to caring for your eyes than scheduling regular eye exams. You also need to make sure your living space is safe because almost half of all eye injuries happen at home. If you’re not careful or wearing appropriate gear, you could accidentally hurt your eyes while performing everyday tasks.

Keep your eyes safe at home using these tips.

Handle Chemicals With Care

Wearing proper eye protection is a must when handling harsh cleaning chemicals. Oven cleaners and bleach are common substances that can cause serious eye injuries. If you accidentally expose your eyes to cleaning products, quickly flush them with plenty of water and get medical assistance. Prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals can increase the risk of long-term eye damage.

Be Careful of Hot Oil and Grease

Always be careful when cooking or frying. Hot oil and grease can burn your cornea. You can avoid serious eye injuries by placing a grease shield or lid on your pan. Immediately flush your eyes with water if exposed to hot grease. Artificial tears can provide relief, but you must still see your eye care provider.

Keep Your Living Space Well-Lit

Good lighting is vital to the safety of your living space. It can prevent slips and falls, especially among older adults. You can combine different types of lighting to achieve balanced illumination indoors. Also, consider adding lights and handrails on your stairs.

Use Protective Eyewear When Doing Yard Work

Make it a habit to inspect your lawn for debris before mowing. Wear safety goggles for protection against airborne particles and chemicals before doing yard work. Place chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides and other products in a safe place.
