How to Prevent Contact-Lens Related Complications

Contact lenses are considered a safe vision correction option. Improper use of your contact lenses, however, may increase your risk of developing an infection. Today, Six One Six Vision Center, your provider of quality eyeglasses and other eye care services, shares tips on how to avoid lens-related complications.

Wash Your Hands Before Handling Your Contacts

With proper hand washing, you can avoid transferring germs, dirt and debris from your hands to your lenses. We recommend using antibacterial or mild, non-cosmetic soaps to prevent eye irritations. Afterward, use a lint-free towel when drying your hands.

Clean Your Lenses Regularly

Use your fingers to gently rub your contact lenses after you remove them, and before you put them back in. This produces mild friction that can help remove surface deposits. Rinse them with a freshly poured, prescribed lens solution afterward. Your optometrist reminds you to avoid using old solutions or other types of solvents as they may contain microorganisms or other impurities that may cause eye infections or irritations.

Replace Your Contact Lenses as Recommended

Different types of contact lenses have different replacement schedules. Daily disposables, for example, should be disposed of after a single use, while other types of lenses can be worn for several weeks or months. Complying with the replacement schedule lowers your risk of lens wear-related complications.

Store Your Contact Lenses Properly

Your lens case also needs proper care and attention. Your eye doctor suggests  disposing of used solution after every use and letting it air dry.  Refrain from leaving it in humid places to prevent mildew formation. You should replace it at least every three months, or as often as you open a new bottle of solution.
