Alternative Myopia Control Methods

Myopia, more commonly known as nearsightedness, is a refractive error that typically develops in childhood. People with myopia have trouble seeing distant objects, while they’re close-range vision remains clear. Myopia is usually managed through prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. In addition to corrective eyewear options, Six One Six Vision Center offers the following alternative high-quality treatment methods for myopia:

Atropine Eye Drops

Atropine eye drops are often used to treat amblyopia or “lazy eyes,” but a 2015 study revealed that small concentrations of this medication can also help halt the progression of myopia. Since then, atropine eye drops have become an accepted method of myopia treatment.

Orthokeratology

Your trusted optometrist may recommend corneal refractive therapy, also referred to as orthokeratology, to help control myopia progression. This involves wearing ortho-k lenses while you sleep. The lenses are specially engineered to temporarily reshape your cornea overnight, correcting surface or structural infirmities. When you wake up, you can remove the lenses and enjoy clear eyesight throughout that day. Please note that this is not a permanent treatment option; you’ll need to wear the lenses again every night to continue seeing clearly the following day.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Your reliable eye care specialist may prescribe multifocal contact lenses to reduce myopia symptoms. While regular contact lenses usually have one lens prescription, multifocal lenses contain different lens powers to help you see better at varying distances. In addition to helping with nearsightedness, they are also recommended for treating farsightedness and presbyopia.
