Things to Expect During an Eye Exam

Eye exams are a must in every eye care plan. They allow us to identify underlying vision problems in their early stages and provide prompt, effective treatment. In today’s post, Six One Six Vision Center tells you what to expect during your eye exam.

Personal Interview

We’ll begin by asking you about your personal and family medical history. This usually involves questions about eye conditions that you or any of your family members may have had. This step lets us establish rapport, building the doctor-patient trust. It also allows us to determine your risk of developing certain eye conditions that tend to be hereditary.

Series of Eye Tests

Your reliable eye doctor will then perform a series of eye tests to assess the health of your eyes. Here are the most common tests:

  • Cover Test: We’ll ask you to alternately cover each eye while staring at a figure from afar. We’ll then do the same while you’re looking at an object up-close. This test lets us check for vision coordination disorders, like strabismus.
  • Visual Acuity Test: We’ll instruct you to read alphanumeric lines off the Snellen chart while you’re standing 20 feet away. This test measures your visual acuity.
  • Refraction Test: If your optometrist finds signs of refractive errors, we may ask you to look through different lenses in a phoropter. This helps determine the best lens prescription to address your eye care needs.
  • Slit-Lamp Exam: This test involves using a biomicroscope to see your internal eye structures at high magnification levels. It helps us identify irregularities in your ocular anatomy, ensuring an accurate diagnosis of potential eye conditions.

These are only some of the usual tests we perform. Once we have the results, we’ll then create a treatment plan for your improved visual health.
