Recommended Eye Exam Frequency for Kids and Adults

Having regular eye exams is the best thing you can do for your eyes. Comprehensive eye exams allow for prompt diagnosis and effective management of various conditions, both visual and systemic. This way, you can enjoy better eyesight for longer.

Today, your eye doctor discusses how often you should have your eyes checked.

Pediatric Eye Exams

Children’s delicate eyes are still developing, which is why you need to be extra proactive about your child’s visual health. Bringing your child to your eye clinic for an eye exam is one of the best things you can do. We recommend scheduling your child for their first comprehensive eye exam between six months to a year old. You should schedule a second eye exam for your child at three years of age and then again at five years old. Doing so can help determine if they need to wear eyeglasses, or have ocular health concerns that can impact the way the eye and brain work together. After this point, your child should have their eyes checked every year.

Adult Eye Exams

Individuals from 18 to 60 years old who are not at a known risk of developing eye conditions are advised to have complete eye exams every year. If we determine that you are high risk for certain vision problems, however, we may need to see you sooner. After the age of 60, adults should continue to have their eyes checked every year.

Our optometrists know that the best way to keep your eyes healthy and your vision sharp is to stay on top of your annual wellness exams. We’ll consider your medical history, current visual status, lifestyle and diet.
