New Vision: How to Adjust to Your New Eyeglasses

Getting new prescription eyeglasses is a wonderful experience, except for one issue: the adjustment phase. To make the adjustment period more bearable, here are some tips from your eye doctor at Six One Six Vision Center.

Perfect Fit

Ill-fitting frames are one of the primary sources of discomfort among people who wear eyeglasses. Don’t hesitate to consult your optician if you feel like your glasses don’t fit properly; they can help. Your frames should rest comfortably on the bridge of your nose and behind your ears. The sides should not dig into your face. If your glasses aren’t fitting properly, the frames may not be the right size. Remember that your eyeglasses should bring comfort along with better vision.

Set Your Expectations

The current state of your eyesight will have an impact on how long the adjustment phase lasts. If your prescription has changed considerably, expect eye strain and dizziness to some degree. Your eye doctor will let you know how much your vision changed since your last checkup.

Get Used to It

There’s simply no way around it. You have to keep wearing your new eyeglasses until you get used to them. Bear in mind that the more often you wear your new specs, the quicker the adjustment period will be. You may remove your eyeglasses and rest your eyes for a while if needed. However, you should go back to wearing your eyeglasses again once the discomfort subsides. Consult your optometrist if you’re still experiencing headaches, dizziness, vision distortion and eye strain two weeks after getting your new prescription eyeglasses.
