Do — Always Keep Your Hands Clean

Germs from unwashed hands can transfer onto contact lenses. This can cause pink eye, among other problems. Make it a practice to wash your hands with soap and water before touching your contacts.

Don’t — Top Off Your Contact Lens Solution

Topping off means filling a container without emptying it first. Never do this with your contact lens solution as it can increase the risk of eye infection. Always use fresh contact lens solution for storing your contacts. Bring a clean, spare contact lens case if you are traveling for more than a day.

Do — Clean Your Lens Case

As eye care specialists, we cannot overstate the importance of good hygiene practices when handling your contacts. Clean your lenses properly by emptying the contact lens case — do not reuse the contact lens solution — put the lids of the case gently on top without screwing it on to allow it to air dry. If you need to rinse out the case and lid use fresh solution (not tap water). Avoid wiping the inside using tissue paper or anything that might leave dust or other residue in the case. Replace your contact lenses every time you purchase a fresh bottle of solution or every 3 months at the longest.

Don’t — Sleep Wearing Your Contact Lenses

Although some types of contact lenses are safe to wear while sleeping, most are not. Do not forget to remove your contact lenses before you go to sleep. If you’re unsure whether your contacts can be worn while sleeping, consult your eye doctor.
