4 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Glasses

Almost everyone will need to wear eyeglasses at some point in their life, whether from childhood due to a refractive error or in middle age and beyond due to presbyopia. While eyeglasses are as ordinary as the air we breathe, you may be surprised to learn a few things about them that you didn’t know.

In this blog, Six One Six Vision Center, a reputable eye care company trusted by local patients, shares lesser-known facts about eyeglasses.

Scratched Lenses Can Affect Your Vision

People tend to ignore the scratches on their lenses. Since they can still see through the lenses, replacing the glasses may seem unnecessary. However, scratches can actually put strain on your eyes, leading to eye fatigue. If you notice a scratch in your lens, you should have that repaired as soon as possible.

New Lenses Should Be Paired With New Frames

Using your old frames for new lenses may seem sensible and economical. However, experts advise against this practice as the process of removing old lenses and attaching new ones to the old frame can weaken the frames.

Frames are usually heated in order to remove the old lenses and then reheated to insert the new lenses. This can stress the frames and increase the risk of splitting, cracking or breaking over time.

Your Prescription May Change Periodically

Visit an optometrist once a year for eye checkup and to ensure that your prescription still suits your vision needs. Different factors can affect the longevity of your prescription, and having the wrong prescription can put a strain on your eyes and negatively impact your quality of life.

Some People Stop Needing Glasses Temporarily

“Second sight” is a phenomenon that occurs in older patients who develop cataracts. It’s sometimes characterized as a honeymoon period during which patients can see better and don’t need their glasses anymore. This happens due to the thickening of the natural lens, which makes the eyes more nearsighted and enables a person to see smaller print without glasses. The quality of vision, however, usually diminishes as the cataract matures.
