How Does Stress Affect Your Eyes?

Stress can be caused by different factors. While it may feel like more of an emotional issue, stress can have an impact on your physical health too, including your vision and eye health.  To understand more about stress-related visual health issues, local eye care specialist Six One Six Vision Center shares insight below:

How Does Stress Affect Your Visual Health?

Many people think that stress is something that we only experience mentally, but it’s important to know that your body can also feel and react to it. Stress also affects people differently. For some people, stress and anxiety can lead to higher levels of adrenaline in the body, which can cause pressure on your eyes. If you have long-term anxiety, you may suffer from eye strain almost regularly!

Typical Stress-Related Symptoms

Fortunately, vision problems caused by stress are temporary. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, you need to take a break and rest. Consider switching to a more healthy diet and trying things like meditation or yoga to keep you calm and relaxed. If any of these symptoms persist, you should see a trusted eye doctor as soon as possible.

  • Blurry Vision – This can make it difficult to concentrate as it can also come with a headache.
  • Sensitivity to Light – This occurs when light, either artificial or natural, hurts your eyes, which can make it difficult to focus on your tasks.
  • Dizziness – If you’re feeling a bit light-headed, it could be due to stress affecting your brain.
  • Eye Twitches or Spasms – Stress can also trigger a contraction of a muscle around your eyes. This usually happens randomly in one eye, and while it is painless, it can be uncomfortable.
