Are Women More Prone to Develop Eye and Vision Problems?

Your likelihood of developing eye conditions depends on several factors, such as family history, age and existing health issues. Even your gender can affect your risk of eye and vision-related issues. Fortunately, regular visits to your eye doctor can help with an early diagnosis and treatment.

Read on to find out if women are really more prone to developing eye and vision problems.

Are Women More Susceptible to Eye Diseases?

Females have a higher risk of suffering from conditions affecting their sight. It’s mainly because women tend to live longer than men. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that females usually don’t experience serious conditions until they reach 70. Meanwhile, men are expected to live 67 healthy years. The older you are, the higher your risk is for certain eye conditions, such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Seeing your optometrist routinely can detect them early and preserve your vision for longer.

Hormones also play a role in the likelihood of developing eye disease. Women go through several hormonal changes throughout their lives. Surges of estrogen during puberty, pregnancy and menopause can affect vision. Some birth control pills also have ocular symptoms because of the shifting progesterone and estrogen levels.

Eye Problems Women Usually Develop

Women live longer, making them more at risk for cataracts and macular degeneration. It’s because the likelihood of these eye conditions increases in older individuals. A leading cause of blindness, glaucoma is also more common in women. Other eye conditions that women are more susceptible to include, dry eye syndrome and diabetic retinopathy.
